Hip Pain and Posture - Is It Important?

There is a plethora of conflicting information going around from numerous sources about the importance of posture, and its role in preventing injuries and pain during everyday activities. Have you found that sitting with your shoulders hunched makes any difference to how you feel throughout the day? Perhaps you have been extra mindful of the way you’ve been moving while starting up a new routine during this Coronavirus Pandemic.

Different people will say different things, but recent research from an expert on hip pain (Dr Alison Grimaldi) suggests that observing hip and pelvic posture during everyday tasks MAY be beneficial for reducing pain, there is no one size fits all posture. Whether modifications are appropriate for you or not should be determined by your physiotherapist and based on how YOU move.

While posture remains important, it needs to be part of an individualised program consisting on education on the condition, advice and exercise prescription.

It is important to remember that a key factor in reducing and preventing position-related pain is MOVEMENT VARIABILITY, and that modifying posture is just one factor that could help you. What may work for you may not work for other people, and there is no one correct way to perform any movement. Keeping yourself moving throughout the day is integral to helping reduce any niggles you may have.
